Mission

The Education Sub-Committee is an advisory body dedicated to raising awareness of wellbore positioning practices and challenges within the drilling industry through workshops, webinars, e-books, public lectures, and other media.

About

Since its inception, the sub-committee has been involved in organizing SPE Applied Technology Workshops as a method of raising awareness of wellbore positioning issues to the broader industry. The workshop “Collision Avoidance and Wellbore Interceptions – Hits and Misses” was held in Inverness Scotland, Denver Colorado, Istanbul Turkey, and Galveston Texas. The workshop content was then expanded to become "Well Placement Best Practice for Increasing Value and Reducing Consequence.”

The Education sub-committee has editorial control for updates and expansion of the Joint Industry Project e-books "Introduction to Wellbore Positioning” and "Well Intercept." The e-books are living documents, and continue to be developed. The "Introduction to Wellbore Positioning” e-book is being translated into Spanish.

The Education sub-committee cooperated with the University of the Highlands and Islands to develop an on-line competency course based on the Wellbore Positioning e-book. Over 50 students from 20 countries have already completed the course. The UHI training website is live. You can watch the promotional video there and see the course details. It is an introduction to the workings of a typical drilling rig and a quick tour of a working rig site.
