Overview:
- Challenges to MWD in the Arctic include escalating level of solar activity and unmodeled crustal anomalies
- Advances in geomagnetic referencing provide a viable alternative and can meet the challenge with precise real-time wellbore positioning with MWD and using Nikaitchuq experience as blueprint for success in other challenging environments

Geomagnetic Referencing At High Latitudes:

- Smaller horizontal component in the Arctic means increased impact from crustal and drillstring magnetic interference

- Important to cover entire wavelength spectrum:

  • Satellite data for long wavelengths, ≥ 250 km
  • Local aeromagnetic surveys for shorter wavelength

- Strong emphasis on quality control and validation
